The highly anticipated upgraded Switch model has finally been announced by Nintendo today with a release date set for the 8th of October, 2021.

7-inch OLED screen
Despite not supporting 4K resolution as was previously rumoured it will feature a 7-inch OLED screen, an upgrade on the 6.2 inch of the original model.
The screen will also be a significant improvement graphically and will be noticeably more vibrant, OLED technology has become more popular over recent years with most high-end TV models switching to OLED screens.
It’s also likely to improve battery efficiency since pixels are actually turned off when displaying black colours. As well as a larger screen the bezel has also been made slimmer (see comparison below).

Added Features
The new model will feature an adjustable stand making tabletop mode easy and comfortable to use.
There will also be a new dock which will feature two USB ports, a HDMI port and a wired LAN port allowing for more stable internet connections.
The new Switch will have 64GB of internal storage which will be able to be expanded with microSD cards sold seperately.
It’ll feature new onboard speakers with “enhanced audio” which will provide a clearer sound in handheld and tabletop mode.

The console will come in two colours on release, a white model with white joycons and a white dock and the classic Neon blue/Neon red model with a plain black dock.
The console will be fully compatible with the full library of Nintendo Switch games however Nintendo has said there maybe differences in game experience due to the new capabilities of the console, such as it’s larger screen size.
Release date and pricing
The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) has been given a release date for the 8th of October 2021, and it will be sold for $349.99 in the US (no UK price has been given as of yet).
After months if not years of rumours, it’s nice to finally get an official announcement on the upgraded switch model and many people will likely be lining up in October to get there hands on it.
